Salymes / Paul Barlet

Salymes / Paul Barlet

Lablachère, Ardèche, France

While on vacation in the region, we tasted his "Marzipan" cuvée for the first time; the wine moved us deeply, it mesmerized us. With no information online, Paul remained a mystery for several years.

Then we finally had the opportunity to discover his work and his story, at his home. A journalist by training, he met his wife in Paris, and when their daughter was born, they decided to raise their child away from the hustle and bustle of a big city.
Paul had long been interested in wine, doing research and devouring books – a real investigative effort. He spent several harvests with the Oustrics (a central point of convergence in the region). In 2018, he found some vineyards and started his business.
The white grapes are purchased from a nearby estate, while the red grapes are from his own estate. He highlights Gamay, Syrah, and especially Chatus, an ancestral and almost forgotten grape variety of the region.
Paul's wines are difficult to describe because they convey so much emotion and energy.
